Atlantic lead on line in Pens-Devils clash

TSN- The battle for supremacy in the Atlantic Division has been slanted one way so far this year. The Pittsburgh Penguins will try for their first win in three games versus the New Jersey Devils this year in tonight's battle of division co-leaders at Mellon Arena.

The Penguins and Devils are both tied for the most points in the NHL with 51, good enough for a 16-point advantage over the third-place New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division.

However, while Pittsburgh has won seven of its 10 games versus division foes this year, two of those losses have been at home to New Jersey by 4-1 margins. The Devils are 6-3-0 versus the Atlantic Division this year and have won eight of their last 11 in the Steel City.

These two clubs will meet for the first time this year in New Jersey on December 30.

Both teams come into this matchup riding impressive win streaks. The Devils are in the midst of their second four-game winning streak of the season, while the Penguins have won five straight overall.

Pittsburgh has been doing its damage in the shootout, where it has won its last two games and is 6-0 this year. Kris Letang scored the lone shootout tally in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Buffalo, while Marc-Andre Fleury halted all three Buffalo skaters in the final frame to cap his 31-save effort.

"I think our side did awesome," Fleury said. "Guys played really hard to the end and in overtime. They blocked a lot of shots and they took the rebounds away from me, so that was big."

Chris Kunitz had the lone regulation tally for the Penguins, who went 0-for-5 on the man advantage but also held the Sabres scoreless on their eight power- play attempts.

The Penguins have now won seven of their last nine at home and begin a three- game residency tonight.

Pittsburgh has an outstanding 12-5-1 mark at home this year, but welcomes a New Jersey squad to town that is 12-2-1 on the road. New Jersey has won three straight as the guest and kicked off a three-game swing with a 5-4 victory in Atlanta on Saturday.

New Jersey fell behind 3-1 in the first period, as Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on six shots before getting the early hook. He was making his 12th straight start and first since setting a new NHL record for most regular- season appearances by a goaltender with 1,030. Yann Danis came on in relief in his first appearance since November 21 and made 19 saves on 20 shots.

Brian Rolston, Rod Pelley and Dean McAmmond all scored in the second period and McAmmond capped a four-goal burst with another marker in the third. Pelley, meanwhile, notched his first goal since November 23, 2007 versus Atlanta.

"We changed goalies to be different," said New Jersey coach Jacques Lemaire. "I thought it was a good opportunity to put Danis in. The guys kept working hard. It's a great win for us because of the situation. Our first period was probably our best period."

New Jersey's Patrik Elias added an assist to run his point streak to seven games. He has four goals and eight points on the run.

Coyotes sign D Eriksson

The Phoenix Coyotes on Monday signed veteran defenseman Anders Eriksson and recalled him from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 34-year-old Swede had a goal and two assists in eight games with the Rampage. He spent the majority of the 2008-09 campaign with Calgary's AHL affiliate, the Quad City Flames.

Originally selected by Detroit with the 22nd overall pick of the 1993 draft, Eriksson has registered 22 goals and 149 assists in 552 career NHL games with the Red Wings, Chicago, Florida, Toronto, Columbus and Calgary.

He won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1998.

Quick named NHL's top star

Quick named NHL's top star

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, Vancouver's Daniel Sedin and Phoenix's Ilya Bryzgalov have been selected as the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending December 13.

Quick picked up the First Star after winning each of his three starts last week by stopping 80 of the 85 shots he faced.

Sedin notched a hat trick against Atlanta and added a goal and an assist in each of the Canucks' other two games last week to garner the Second Star.

Bryzgalov captured the Third Star after a 2-0-1 week -- the lone loss coming in an eight-round shootout -- with a shutout.

Philadelphia Flyers Give out 3 year extension

Flyers give D Bartulis three-year extension

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Wednesday that defenseman Oskars Bartulis was signed to a three-year contract extension.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The 22-year-old Bartulis has played in 10 career games -- all this season with Philadelphia -- and has two assists and six penalty minutes.

"Oskars has developed nicely over the past two years and fit in nicely with our team," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "We are happy to have him under contract and are pleased to know he is part of our defensive group for the next several years."

Bartulis was selected by Philadelphia in the third round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Minnessota Wild welcome the Predators for some Hockey Action

Wild welcome Preds to Minnesota

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Wild will try for their first three-game winning streak of the season when they welcome the Nashville Predators for tonight's clash at Xcel Energy Center.

This marks the first of two games this week between the Wild and Predators as the clubs will also meet in Nashville this Saturday. It's not a home-and-home, however, as both teams will face different teams on Friday.

The Predators recorded a 4-3 regulation win in Minnesota when the teams faced off on October 28. The clubs have split the last six meetings and the Wild have come out on top in seven of the last 11 encounters. Minnesota also has three victories in the last five matchups in the Gopher State.

The Wild are coming off a home-and-home sweep of Colorado and will try to win three straight for the first time since ending the 2008-09 on three-game winning streak from April 7-11.

Minnesota earned a 5-3 home decision on Friday against the Avalanche and then posted a shootout victory the following night in Denver. Andrew Ebbett and Mikko Koivu each scored a goal in the shootout on Saturday to lift the Wild to the 3-2 decision at Pepsi Center.

Guillaume Latendresse scored his first goal in his second game with the Wild, who are 11-1-2 in their last 14 games against Colorado. Latendresse came over last week from Montreal in a trade for forward Benoit Pouliot.

Eric Belanger also scored, and Josh Harding made 20 stops to get his first win of the season in his fourth try. The Wild are expected to go back to regular starter Niklas Backstrom tonight.

The Wild could be without defensemen Kim Johnsson (flu) and Marek Zidlicky (lower body) and forward Antti Miettinen (flu) tonight. The trio are listed as questionable.

Minnesota, which is 7-3-1 as the host this year, is playing the first of two straight at home tonight. The Wild will also host Anaheim on Friday before beginning a five-game road trip with Saturday's test in Nashville.

The Predators, meanwhile, have dropped two of their last three games following a season-high, seven-game winning streak.

Nashville also ended a three-game homestand on a down note when it lost 5-0 to Calgary on Monday. Miikka Kiprusoff posted his third shutout of the season with 22 saves and Jarome Iginla led a group of five different goal-scorers for the Flames.

Ryan Suter had a team-high three shots for the Predators, while Pekka Rinne was beaten four times on 29 shots in defeat.

The Preds are starting a two-game road trip tonight and will also visit Chicago on Friday before kicking off a four-game homestand against the Wild. Nashville is 6-5-1 as the guest this year, but has won its last two games away from the Music City.

Duchene, Anderson carry Avs past Lightning

Duchene, Anderson carry Avs past Lightning

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Matt Duchene scored twice for his first career multi-goal game and Craig Anderson made 33 saves to record his third shutout of the season, as the Colorado Avalanche earned a 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum.

Wojtek Wolski registered an empty-net tally for Colorado, which has won five straight and six of their last seven versus the Lightning. The Avalanche snapped a three-game losing skid.

"It's always great to get a win," Anderson said. "Just great for us to get back on a winning streak and get back to winning ways and I think this was huge for us, especially on the road."

Antero Niittymaki turned in a solid performance stopping 26-of-28 shots for the Lightning, who have lost five of seven overall.

"We had three early power plays and we didn't get anything accomplished," Lightning forward Martin St. Louis said. "That falls on me. I'm out there quite a bit. I wasn't sharp early on and that hurt the team."

Duchene opened the scoring 8:16 into the first period when his wrist shot from the slot squeezed through Niittymaki's pads.

Colorado then tallied on the power play at 13:38 of the second. Again it was Duchene doing the honors as he came down the right side and after having his initial shot stopped by Niittymaki from in tight, the center chipped the puck in to make it a 2-0 game.

Tampa had several opportunities to get on the board in the third period, but Anderson was magnificent throughout. Wolski then added an empty net tally with 14 seconds remaining.
